Football St George (FSG) was saddened to hear of the passing of former St George Budapest Women’s team coach, Joe O’Connor.

Joe was a pioneer in Australian women’s football and former coach of Sydney Prague, St George Budapest Women’s, and NSW Women in the 1960s and 1970s.

Joe was also the coach of the 1975 Australian XI team who played at the inaugural AFC Women’s Championship in Hong Kong. Joe’s wife, Pat O’Connor, is a former Captain of the Australian Women’s National Team and St George Budapest Women’s team.

Joe (and Pat) was a central figure in the organisation and running of the NSW Metropolitan Ladies Soccer Association (MLSA) in 1967 and Australian Women’s National Championship in 1974. The St George Budapest women’s team went undefeated for seven years from 1971 – 1977  in the MLSA under the leadership of Joe.

FSG and the wider St George community pass on its condolences to Pat, Joe’s family, and friends.

May he rest in peace.
