The 2025 National Club Championships saw the very best Powerchair Football talent from across Australia and New Zealand gather at Nissan Arena in Brisbane from 14–20 March, hosted by the Queensland Powerchair Football Association. Ten elite teams battled it out over a week of fast-paced, tactical football for the ultimate title of National Champion—with Football St George finishing a strong third overall in a highly competitive field.
Representing the region with pride, Football St George was led on court by a core of experience and international class. Australian representative and team captain Abdullah Karim guided the squad with composure and skill, alongside England international and marquee man Brad Bates, whose dynamic presence made a huge impact. Former Australian team member Chris Turnbull, Chris Kessaris, and Craig Kilby each played vital roles throughout the tournament, contributing to a well-rounded and resilient team performance.
Off the court, the team was supported by an outstanding staff, including Head Coach Diab Karim, Assistant Coach Sakis Glavinas, and Team Mechanic Spiros Kessaris, all of whom ensured the players were prepared, motivated, and game-ready each day. The program was overseen by Technical Director Brian Dene, who has played a key role in growing Powerchair Football within the Football St George community.
The tournament was eventually won by a well-drilled Melbourne City side, but the Football St George team walked away with their heads held high and plenty to be proud of.
Captain Abdullah Karim reflected on the team’s performance:
“This group gave everything. We stuck together and played for each other. Finishing third in such a strong tournament shows just how far we’ve come as a team. I’m incredibly proud.”
Brad Bates, making his mark as an international recruit, said:
“It’s been an honour to wear the Football St George shirt. The energy, the commitment, and the passion from everyone—on and off the court—was top class. We’ll only get stronger from here.”
Coach Diab Karim praised his squad’s mindset:
“These players prepared professionally and gave 100% every game. We competed with the best in the country and proved we belong at the top level. This is just the beginning of what this group can achieve.”
Technical Director Brian Dene added:
“Powerchair Football is a vital part of our Football St George community. We’re building a culture of excellence, inclusion, and ambition. This result is a credit to the players and staff who’ve put in the work week after week.”
With momentum building and belief growing, Football St George is excited for what’s ahead in the Powerchair Football landscape. This team has set the standard—and the future looks bright.
