FSG Centenary Event

Saturday 3 August 2024 marked a historic day for Football St George, with the association formally recognising its centenary.

The evening was hosted by Daniel Garb, and opened with the awarding of new pins to the Life Members by Football St George Chairperson Irene Hatzipetros, who had this to say about the event;

On behalf of Football St George, I am delighted to share the success of our Centenary Celebrations held on August 3, 2024, at the Novotel in Brighton Le Sands. It was a night filled with joy, nostalgia, and gratitude as we commemorated 100 years of our organisation’s dedication to fostering football in the community.

The evening was marked by heartfelt speeches, at which time we had the honor of reflecting on our rich history and acknowledging the contributions of our member clubs, volunteers, and staff. We reminisced about our journey, from the early days with the first draw on May 13, 1924, to the well-maintained pitches we enjoy today.

We paid tribute to iconic past members whose legacies continue to inspire us. Their stories, along with the memories shared by their families, added a touching layer to our celebrations.


Special recognition was given to our esteemed Life Members, whose exceptional dedication and service have been instrumental in shaping Football St George. Presenting Life Member pins to individuals who were present on the night such as Mr. Angelo Bonura, Mr. Mark Dinley, Ms. Jacky Finlay-Jones, Mr. John Hedison, Mr. Ivan Pavlic, Mr. Peter Sarikakis, and Mr. Trevor Trotman was a highlight of the evening.


The Centenary Celebrations were not just a look back at our past but a celebration of the spirit, camaraderie, and sheer joy that football brings to our lives. As we move forward, we are committed to building on this rich legacy and striving for even greater heights.

Thank you to everyone who has been part of this incredible journey. Here’s to the next 100 years of Football St George! 

 

The guests were addressed by the Hon David Coleman MP, and then treated to a Q and A with former Socceroo and Football Australia Hall of Famer George Harris, who spoke of his experiences with the Socceroo’s, St George Budapest, and Sans Souci FC as a junior.

Football NSW Chairperson Gilbert Lorquet then presented Football St George Chairperson Irene Hatzipetros with a plaque commemorating the 100-year milestone, and Football St George CEO Phil Brown announced the four people who had a perpetual trophy named in the honour, recognising their significant contribution to football in the region, being;

  • J.Finlay-Jones Cup which will be presented to the U21 Female A Champions
  • K.Fyfe Shield which will be presented to the Junior Fair play winner
  • J.Hedison Cup which will now be for the U45 Men A Champions
  • S.Mallios Shield which will be given to the winners of the Club Championship (10+ Teams)

The evening then concluded with a speech from Life Member John Hedison.

  • Kwik Kopy Taren Point who designed & produced the pull-up banners,
  • WT Sports & Recognition who lovingly cleaned and restored the old trophies,
  • Greg Werner, St George Football Referees Association, Ramsgate RSL Football Club, Lugarno FC , Rockdale City Raiders, Penshurst West Football Club, Connells Point Rovers FC, Hurstville Aquatic Leisure Centre, and the Jamberoo Pub for lending the most amazing football artefacts.
