Last Thursday evening (18th April) Football St George (FSG) presented an evening with Tom Byer at Ramsgate RSL.

Over 40 club officials, coaches and parents had the privilege to listen to Tom, a well-known figure in the world of football, give his insights into youth player development.

Tom is originally from New York but has spent much of his career in Japan. Tom is often credited with revolutionising youth Football development in Japan, especially in the area of Technical Skill Development. Tom has authored books on youth Football development, conducted coaching clinics and seminars worldwide, and works with various Football organisations and federations to implement his coaching methods. He has also been involved in initiatives to promote Football development in many countries worldwide for over 30 years.

Tom had this to say after the event, ” FSG is exactly the type of organisation we can help to grow the game.” In speaking about FSG Technical Director Brian Dene, Tom went on to state that “He understands the value of implementing a Football Starts at Home Strategy for the future of the game and knows the vital role that parents can play in their child’s development.”

Connells Point Rovers FC President Lance Condon who attended the event had this to say about the evening, “Tom spoke passionately about his philosophy of football based on his great wealth of knowledge developed from evidence-based experiences.

He believes that to improve the elite player you need to improve the grass roots player. He strongly stated that football starts at home and a child’s first coach is their parent who is present and encouraging, creating an environment that enables the child to experiment with the ball at their feet, developing ball mastery – no shooting or passing.

Tom was a very thought-provoking speaker that challenged our thinking about player development.”

FSG Technical Director Brian Dene said on the night “By providing the football community with an opportunity to hear someone like Tom speak so passionately about youth development it can only help coaches and parents take real consideration into how they develop their players/children going forward and considering the technical abilities of players in Asia it really is a great benchmark to look at it and take note of and try replicate here in Australia.”

FSG would like to thank Ramsgate RSL for hosting the event and also a big thank you to Tom Byer for giving us his time and providing such an insight into youth development.
