The Georges River area’s reputation as a premier sporting destination received a boost today with the announcement that Sydney FC will play seven A League home games at Kogarah’s iconic Jubilee Stadium from November.

Georges River Council Mayor Kevin Greene said that the announcement builds on
the area’s long history of hosting international, national and professional level sporting events, most recently Council’s ‘Summer of Cricket’ series featuring Women’s Big Bash League and Sheffield Shield games.

“Council resumed management of Jubilee Stadium in 2017, and through our position of increased sharing of the facility with other sporting codes and the community, the Stadium continues to be widely utilised for sporting and other events.

“We’re thrilled by the news that Jubilee Stadium will host Sydney FC and football fans from across Sydney and beyond. Jubilee Stadium is a premium venue and will provide the Sky Blues with a first class stage for their home matches.

“The news also signifies the start of a new sporting era for the Georges River area, with the Stadium now in contention to host Asian Champion League and Football Federation Australia Cup games in the near future,” he added.

Sydney FC CEO Danny Townsend expressed his enthusiasm for calling Jubilee Stadium home and is looking forward to bringing the fun and excitement of the world game to the area.

“It’s fantastic news for the people of the St George, Sutherland and Wollongong regions that we’ve been allocated seven games at Jubilee Stadium and I’m excited to be taking our matches to one of our traditional member heartlands.

“We plan to make every game a fantastic experience for the family and for those who want a great night out,” he said.

The announcement is also great news for local grassroots football fans and players. St George Football Association General Manager Craig Kiely expects local sporting groups to reap the benefits of experiencing world-class football matches close to home.

“It is a massive coup for local football participants and the wider community and we know that they will come out in huge numbers to support their A-League heroes right here in their own backyard.

“As a partner Association to Sydney FC, we have been working closely across a range of grassroots programs, including a football clinic at Jubilee Stadium these school holidays, and having the Club play in our district will only further strengthen these initiatives into the future.

“Georges River Council has been an outstanding partner for football and have been able to open up the venue for participants across all levels of the game in the last year”, he added.
