Retiring St George Football Association (SGFA) Directors Ivan Pavelic and Angelo Bonura have been announced as joint winners of the 2019 SGFA Gold Medal.
Pavelic and Bonura were awarded the Associations highest honour at a gala evening held at Doltone House, Sylvania Waters on Friday evening, 27 September.
The award was presented by SGFA Chairman, Tony Karahalias and last year’s Gold Medal winner, Hassan Chebli from Banksia Tigers. Bonura was unable to attend the evening as he was overseas on a family vacation.
The evening was hosted by journalist, author and former SBS Sport reporter, Liz Deep-Jones and got off to a fantastic start thanks to comedian and illusionist Adam Dean, who was a huge hit with the crowd. It was a fantastic evening which provided a chance to thank and reward Club volunteers, coaches, players and referees across the district.
SGFA were honoured to have a number of VIPs attend the evening including Georges River Councillor Lou Konjarski, Football NSW CEO Stuart Hodge, Danny Townsend, Sydney FC CEO, Hannah Lidster, Sydney FC GM Consumer Business & Community and Sydney FC players Chris Zuvela and Trent Buhagiar.
SGFA would also like to thank to our sponsor representatives Andrew Head from Deploy Football, Anthony Trieste from Wholesale Trophies and representives from the Associations NPL Club, St George City FA, who attended the evening.
In addition, SGFA would like to thank Andrew Head for donating a signed Deploy football signed by former Socceroo Scott Chipperfield which formed part of the evenings auction.
Gold Medal 2019 | Ivan Pavelic & Angelo Bonura
The SGFA Board of Ali Jomaa, John Taylor and Tony Karahalias would like to nominate retiring Directors Angelo Bonura and Ivan Pavelic for the 2019 Gold Medal Award as joint winners.
Both Angelo and Ivan have contributed significantly to the SGFA over many years and very much been part of the evolution and growth of the Association in the past 4 to 5 years, and played important roles in the improvement of relationships with government and football stakeholders.
Angelo and Ivan have also played key roles in ensuring that our member Clubs benefit from improved facilities in the region and have supported the Clubs committees, volunteers, SGFA staff and fellow Directors selflessly and tirelessly throughout their time with SGFA.
In addition, Angelo and Ivan were inaugural directors of St George City and have been part of one of the NPL’s great success stories in recent times, having been promoted from State League to NPL 2 in a period of 3 years.
Ivan has been a Committee member and Director for the Association for over 10 years. He has worked tirelessly to assist the Association meet its financial obligations as Treasurer, drive growth in participation numbers and support our member Clubs.
Ivan is a former player and coach within the SGFA and was also previously a committee member of Hurstville ZFC for a number of years prior to his role with SGFA Board.
Ivan was also part of the inaugural Board for St George City, the NPL entity established by SGFA to deliver its development and representative programs.
Ivan has made a significant and valuable contribution to SGFA over many years and always acted in the best interest of football and the wider community.
Angelo has been on the SGFA Board since 2012 and Chairman since 2016, assuming the role vacated by the late Sok Mallios.
Angelo has been an integral part of the ever-growing professionalism of the SGFA and in his role as Chair overseen the transformation of SGFA to become one of the state’s leading Associations.
Angelo was chair of the GPT for a number of years, whilst also fulfilling his role as a Director and also played a crucial role in securing the rights to Ador Avenue synthetic on behalf of the SGFA community Clubs.
Angelo has led from the front at all times with great professionalism, dignity and honesty and will be missed by all.
Angelo also chaired the St George City board and was part of the inaugural Board for St George City, the NPL entity established by SGFA to deliver its development and representative programs.
Both Angelo and Ivan have left a great legacy for the game in the St George region. During their time at SGFA, participation numbers have grown, significant facility improvements have been achieved and an NPL club established.
They will leave the Association with the utmost respect from their fellow Directors, Club committee members and all football stakeholders for the contribution they have made to the sport of football in St George.
